Cautionary Tale

I watched the k-drama My Dearest Nemesis because I'm ready to start watching Korean dramas again, and it sounded like a cute romance. It was, only with an antagonist I seriously disliked. I rarely react so strongly to older female antagonists, but Ban Hyo-jeong was probably the most hateful of all time. The story begins with Baek Soo-jeong (beautifully played by the ever-luminous Moon Ga-young) and Ban Joo-yeon (the odd-voiced Choi Hyun-wook, who only just managed to keep up with his costar), two teens who meet online through a game and develop first a friendship, and then a crush on each other. It's all heart-pounding first love stuff. This drama should be a cautionary tale to any kid who falls for someone online, too. Anyway, when they finally meet, 19-year-old Soo-jeong discovers Joo-yeon is much younger than her, is into hard rock and acts like a complete (but sweet) idiot. This breaks her heart, and when he chooses a very public and dramatic way to confess hi...

'Tis the Season

Hurricane Season just began, but our preparations for it started back in March. We go through the same routine every year by checking our supplies, testing equipment we use during and after hurricanes, and purchasing replacements or extra stock to see us through. Everyone in the usual strike zones should be doing the same. Maintaining the emergency pantry has really helped eliminate a lot of last-minute food shopping for the season. We now always keep six months of extra non-perishable food on hand, and I'm working toward beefing that up gradually to a year's worth. One of the best investments I made last year was buying a Battery Daddy case to hold all our batteries. It's double sided, and now I know in a glance how many of each size battery we have on hand. It also keeps them organized so much better than just tossing them in a shoebox. I got mine on Amazon for $14.98 last September. I wanted a better option than bottled water for our drinking water suppl...

Last Month

My first mini-quilt of May was this pink and blue whirlwind, inspired by a quilter friend's colors for her monthly project. For the first time I used my sewing machine to hem a pair of jeans. I patched some holes on a thrifted pair of shorts with a swatch from a cute dollar store fat quarter. I finished crocheting another throw, this one from stash yarn and leftover scraps from other projects. My second mini-quilt of May was another bunny-inspired piece when I was feeling a bit blue. I altered a pair of thrifted capris into summer shorts for me. An overflowing scrap bag gave me the idea to start using one night a week to make as many small projects as I can out of leftover fabric. These two cup sleeves and the mug rug were my first go at that. A rush of creative ideas made me make my third and fourth mini-quilt of May together; the first one was a little tribute to my mom for Mother's Day, and the second was in honor of my favorite person. Not t...
