City Walk

While we were in the city last month my guy and I walked a large complex of outlet stores that had a kind of indoor/outdoor design. Not quite a mall, but not standalone stores, either. Anyway, it was a place neither of us had ever visited, and we were unaware of just how high fashion the place was. In fact, I was hoping they had a Barnes & Noble or a B. Dalton.

The complex was strictly about high fashion, I realized, when I saw the Versace store.

It amused me that we'd ended up in such a place. My guy and I both grew up quite poor; we mostly wore hand me downs and rummage sale clothes as kids. My mom only bought me a new church dress every year, and as I recall that came from Sears. By the time I got old enough to work and buy my own clothes, I still couldn't afford the designer variety. I've always tried to dress comfortably rather than fashionably, too. I admire designer fashions, and enjoy shows like Project Runway and Next in Fashion for the sewing, but I would never feel comfortable wearing expensive clothes (especially as these days I thrift nearly all of my wardrobe.)

Seeing people standing in line and waiting just to be allowed inside the Gucci store made me feel sorry for them -- and glad I'm not fashionable. :)
