By Design (or not)

This was the last lap quilt that I made for my mom before she passed away. I give away most of the bigger quilts I make and then forget about them, so I decided to hunt through my photo archives and revisit some of my old work.

A dear friend sent me a box of fabric strips and some log cabin blocks she'd sewn, and they matched perfectly with a furoshiki I had on hand. So I made this quilt out of them and sent it back to her. I think this is one of the prettiest quilts I've ever designed.

The very first bargello quilt I ever attempted; I did this with my own design rather than follow a pattern because I learn a technique quicker if I don't follow instructions. This one went to Mom, too.

The only panel kit quilt I've ever made. I also made a measuring mistake and the strips in the sashing didn't line up correctly. But it was fun to try one.

I cobbled this completely recycled quilt together out of a quilted pillow case and some cutter quilt pieces.

Another quilt I sent to Mom for Christmas when she was living up North so she would have something sunny and bright to keep her warm (my favorite person and one of her pets posed with it for me so I could make sure it was big enough.) This one I made with a Yellow Brick Road patchwork pattern, which is one of my favorites, but I thought the colors were really nice.

Looking back at what I make has me realizing I had no particular style when I began designing most of the quilts I make. I think I just liked lots of color and interesting patterns. These days I'm leaning more toward neutrals and naturally dyed fabrics, but I still like making bright happy quilts, too.
