Progress

I pieced the top for my Halloween quilt. I should mention another reason I use Atkinson Design's Yellow Brick Road pattern so often for quilts: it's all straight sewing rectangles and squares. After you've made it a few times, it's very fast to put together. For this variation I cut all the pieces in one night (it took a couple hours), pieced the blocks in one night (about the same amount of time), and sewed them together into a top in one night (ditto.) So about six hours from start to top for the baby quilt size.

I went out thrifting to find backing fabric, and found this three-yard piece of novelty fabric that seemed like the thing (finding Halloween novelty print fabric in thrift shops is very hit-or-miss this time of year.)

I then batted, backed and pinned the quilt top. The cotton batting I used was one small amount that I got in a thrifted lot, and was just the right size for the quilt.

I mulled over which quilting thread to use for a bit; I didn't want to use black or any dark color. This was the only orange quilting thread I have on hand, so I settled on it.

Now I'm starting the hand quilting. It will probably take me a week and a half to finish, so stay tuned to see the final result.

As we head into December, here are ten ideas for easy handmade gifts: Cookie Exchange: If you live close to your friends invite them over for a cookie exchange. Basically everyone bakes a set amount of their favorite cookies, and these are exchanged at the gathering by lottery, sharing a little from each batch with everyone, or however you want to do it. Glorious. Kinda

Writing up my thoughts on the Chinese drama You are my Glory is going to be one of those head-scratchers; I liked it, it got annoying, I liked it anyway, it got more annoying. In the end I was left feeling like most of the last third of the series was smacking me on the nose for being a romantic and wishing, not for the first time, I was a screenwriter who could get hired to fix this script. Anyway, okay. The premise for this series is actually pretty good: poor but brilliant aerospace engineer Yu Tu (played by the fabulously handsome Yang Yang) crosses paths with fabulously wealth but not-too-bright actress Qiao Jingjing (portrayed by the genuinely pretty Dilraba Dilmurat) who was his high school classmate.
