I'm not having a great month. We got sick at the end of August, which lasted for almost three weeks. Once we finally recovered I tried to get on with my late summer/early fall projects, which has not gone as well as I'd hoped. I don't like depending on others when I'm trying to accomplish major goals, and this month illustrates why. I was obliged to depend on someone else for guidance with one large project this month, but instead I got ignored and that derailed everything. Since I was doing all the work for that other person, that stung quite a bit, but I've let it go.

In pursuit of the personal happiness I really need after all the drama, I've been working on reading A History of Food by Maguelonne Toussaint-Samat; it's an English translation that is a little clunky in places because the translator didn't correctly interpret the French, but the meaning still comes through. I love learning about the many ways the foods we eat evolved since ancient times.

I'm also rewatching (for the second time) the Chinese romantic drama Love Me, Love My Voice because I find it soothing and heart-warming, which I also need.

As my hands are a mess at the moment I am not getting a lot done creatively other than mini-quilts this month, but I am hand-quilting the Halloween quilt to work out the stiffness and trigger finger-induced partial paralysis, and it seems to be helping a little. After this quilt I will likely crochet another blanket to get in some addition physical therapy.

After finding this Caron one pound skein of lovely peach yarn in my thrifted lot I raided my stash for two cakes of Mandala in Pegasus, which matches it perfectly. For practice and hand therapy I'm going to make another Worth Street Afghan with this free pattern , but this time I'll use the yarn that was recommended for it plus the one pound skein. I'm not quite ready to do the vintage/recycled linen quilt I had planned (still a bit too nervous about the idea), so I'm going to use some color therapy and make a quilt from these thrifted green fat quarters. I considered doing another Yellow Brick road patchwork pattern, but I might go with a split rail fence like this one.

Better than Fried

I cut some chives from the kitchen garden to make garlic-chive baked fries for dinner. This is a great side dish for veggie burgers. Click here for the recipe from Taste of Home.com.

In the Kitchen Garden

Our strawberries are taking over the kitchen garden, but I don't mind. This week I want to make some strawberry banana nice cream (a vegan version of ice cream) and maybe a chocolate cake with berries and cream for the topping. There's thyme in the garden now, too, which I'll dry and jar for cooking along with the chives and the oregano. Next we'll plant cucumbers, as I use a ton of those in our salads and for snacks.
