A dear friend gave me a gift card for Christmas, which I used to buy these remnants from my favorite linen bedding maker (there's one more bundle on the way, too.)
Often quilters are turned off by the idea of purchasing used fabrics, but I wanted to show these as they are pristine and in new condition. These are trimmings from the maker's business, which they resell in bundles. Real Belgian linen is quite expensive, too, so this is a way for me to use wonderful fabric at a fraction of the cost.
Linen is made from the flax plant, and has several qualities that make it a great textile to work with in art and quilting. It's very soft, breathable, and has a natural, homespun-type appearance that I find quite attractive. It doesn't behave like quilting cotton (it's heavier, and sort of has a mind of its own) but once you master working with it you can make soft, extremely comfortable quilts, which is what I primarily use it for in my work. If you want to get started working with linen it's best to try a small project, like a bag or a crib quilt to gain some experience.
