I set aside the rejoined crazy quilt piece after I added black binding and a bit of embroidery work on the patches I added. I really had to fight through a lot of thick layers of wool and old batting to sew on the binding, and it still came out really wonky. Wool is my least favorite fabric to embroider, too. I know I should redo it, but I'm not sure what's next -- do I cover the Frankenstein stitching I used to cobble the piece together with lace, ribbon, or decorative stitches? Or should I take it out in the back yard and burn it?
Just kidding with that last bit. I'm frustrated, but I know when I wrestle with a project this much it's best to declare a time out.
I'm also still pondering the patchwork design for the next linen quilt, and not quite mentally prepared to begin a big project, so I hauled out my art cloth scraps to use some in one more little piece.
I decided to try a slow stitch strip project to wind around this wooden spool; I've seen these in kits on Etsy and I wanted to try one with my own supplies. The muslin and linen binding strips I removed from a cutter quilt piece have great vintage texture, so I ironed them flat to sew into the foundation strip.
This is not going to be a gigantic or complicated project, obviously, but it was fun to pick out which scraps to use.
From here it's all improvisation and meditation, which I need. Stay tuned to see the results.
