Another Year

I usually do a simple "wishing you" holiday post, and I will still have a wish for you at the end. That said, changes are coming directly ahead in 2026 that will cause people a lot of suffering and grief, particularly those with serious health conditions who can't afford to pay for health insurance anymore. I can still maintain coverage myself without dipping into my retirement account, but only because my guy will be helping me pay the ridiculous premiums I must fork over until I turn 65 later this year (and since I've financially supported him for the last 25 years, this is only right.)

My advice on the outrageous health insurance situation is to seek support and low-cost or free medical treatment via programs in your state (NAFCC is a good place to start), as well as ask family for help with paying for health insurance if possible.

Because of the health insurance situation and the rising cost of basically everything I am planning a no-spend year in 2026. I've done single months in the past when I stop spending except for the absolute necessities like food and meds, but I actually need to do a full twelve months this time around. That is why I've been stocking up on yarn, fabric and other supplies, so I'll have enough to see me through to 2027. To be accountable to myself I'm going to keep a monthly ledger and blog about what I spent at the end of each month.

As in years past I have no New Year's resolutions other than the no-spend year. I intend to be grateful to be alive, which is becoming more and more a privilege at my age, and put my efforts into working, creating and (hopefully) inspiring others to do the same.

For the blog I'll be trying to do more book recommendations; I'm also posting an image of what I'm currently reading in the sidebar. Much of the content will be the same as last year, hopefully with less whining.

I know it will be easy during the year ahead to become depressed, mired down in despair and utterly disillusioned about, well, everything. Really, I'm right there with you. But given a choice between diving into the abyss or reaching for the light no matter how difficult it might be, I think I'd rather stick to the latter. Let's be valiant, turn our back on the darkness and hatred, and try to hang in and support each other. Let's opt for providing kindness and understanding to others in what is going to be a very tough time, always -- and maybe we'll all get through 2026 intact.

Happy New Year, everyone.

Stuff

After finding this Caron one pound skein of lovely peach yarn in my thrifted lot I raided my stash for two cakes of Mandala in Pegasus, which matches it perfectly. For practice and hand therapy I'm going to make another Worth Street Afghan with this free pattern , but this time I'll use the yarn that was recommended for it plus the one pound skein. I'm not quite ready to do the vintage/recycled linen quilt I had planned (still a bit too nervous about the idea), so I'm going to use some color therapy and make a quilt from these thrifted green fat quarters. I considered doing another Yellow Brick road patchwork pattern, but I might go with a split rail fence like this one.

Journal Find

This is a page from my 2010 poetry journal. My handwriting isn't the best, so I'll transcribe it: If my heart survives to tell all the secrets kept inside it will be an abalone shell in which the beauty did reside. But I think I will always be lost to the tides that rage in me . . . humbling and polishing . . . I don't write many self-portrait poems, but this one isn't too embarrassing. A bit overly dramatic, but the girl I was eleven years ago went through some tough times. I'm in a much more peaceful place today.

Watchable Farce

The k-drama Undercover High School is a series that brings a handsome spy to play a student at an elite private school where a legend about billions of gold hidden there persists. It's more silly slapstick comedy than anything, but has some surprising romantic and dramatic moments, too. Seo Kang-joon is one of my favorite Korean actors, and this is the first series he's made since finishing up his mandatory military service. He plays Jeong Hae-seong/ Jeong Si-hyun, an NIS agent who infiltrates a snobby elitist school to hunt down the gold. There are four urban legends connected to the treasure that he has to figure out, all under the too-watchful eye of his homeroom teacher, Oh Su-Ah (Jin Ki-joo) whom he eventually discovers was his elementary school love Oh Bong-ja (there's a lot of name changing in this series.) The hunt for the treasure is the highlight of this series, but the romance between the leads is cute, too (and not as taboo as you might think, given that...
