Reset

I'm getting complicated and scattered with my creativity lately, so I set everything in progress aside to do a start-to-finish single project as a kind of reset. I started with a long strip of pieced binding from the recently-arrived scrap box, and sewed it into a block. To this block I added a couple of white print ends and started quilting it.

I used some wide twill ribbon I salvaged from a bundle of towels I bought to use as the straps for the bag. While I worked on this project I thought a lot about how I was getting in my own way. It seems like I have too many ideas, too much material on hand, and not enough time.

I have two quilts now that I've started but not finished, and that also makes me uneasy (I'm not a WIP or a UFO maker; I prefer to keep working on something until it's done.) I do know on some level that I need to downsize my ambitions and focus on one thing at a time.

I saw this little oval of infinity on the bag that happened spontaneously while I was sewing the strip into a block, and it reminded me of that Muppet face that appeared on my linen quilt in progress. Perhaps it's the universe chuckling at me again. Anyway, I feel ready to go back to the art quilt, finish that, and then get back to work on the linen quilt.

Glorious. Kinda

Writing up my thoughts on the Chinese drama You are my Glory is going to be one of those head-scratchers; I liked it, it got annoying, I liked it anyway, it got more annoying. In the end I was left feeling like most of the last third of the series was smacking me on the nose for being a romantic and wishing, not for the first time, I was a screenwriter who could get hired to fix this script. Anyway, okay. The premise for this series is actually pretty good: poor but brilliant aerospace engineer Yu Tu (played by the fabulously handsome Yang Yang) crosses paths with fabulously wealth but not-too-bright actress Qiao Jingjing (portrayed by the genuinely pretty Dilraba Dilmurat) who was his high school classmate. He's looking for a new job that pays better; she's in hot water due to an inappropriate product endorsement snafu, and they end up spending a lot of time together. Make It Yourself

As we head into December, here are ten ideas for easy handmade gifts: Cookie Exchange: If you live close to your friends invite them over for a cookie exchange. Basically everyone bakes a set amount of their favorite cookies, and these are exchanged at the gathering by lottery, sharing a little from each batch with everyone, or however you want to do it.
